Shortly after open heart surgery came to Cape Cod Hospital in 2002, a local Mended Hearts chapter was formed. 

Bart Kazin was a cardiac patient living on Cape Cod and he was the person who pursued chartering a local chapter.  He approached Cape Cod Hospital with the idea and also coordinated with The Mended Hearts Inc.’s national organization to get the ball rolling.

In November of 2002 the first Cape Cod-Hyannis chapter meeting was held with Cape Cod Hospital.  Bart and his wife Phyllis along with Tim and Louise Crane and
Ken and Maryse Ethier were six of the original participants.  The hospital agreed to support and sponsor a local chapter. 

At that time, Mended Hearts was affiliated with the American Heart Association and in addition to Cape Cod Hospital, there was a local chapter of AHA in Hyannis at that time who welcomed the creation of a local MHI chapter.  

In February of 2003 with trained, accredited Mended Hearts volunteers for hospital visiting the local chapter #315 of MHI was charted and began the local support program.  

Cape Cod Chapter #315 was 1 of 3 MHI chapters in the state of MA. when it was formed.  

Since that time, Chapter 315 Mended Hearts Accredited Volunteers have had over 4,500 visits with cardiac patients and their Families
